SEARCHING FOR QUARTZBURG
By Rachel Reichert, Seth Ogilvie
Jim Croft: Bookmaker, Santa, Idaho
Digital Photographs, Audio Documentary, 2012
Searching For Quartzburg investigated the identities of dreamers, visionaries, eccentrics, hermits, and those living outside mankind’s self-imposed boundaries between 2010-2012. This collection of audio and photography explored the lives of individuals who are, in a word, Outsiders. Outside of what is culturally accepted. Outside of societal norms. Outside of any expectations except their own.
Jim Croft is a bookbinder, builder, inventor, and toolmaker. He believes things are done better when they are done by hand. His works reflect this as his books are internationally recognized and collected. Searching For Quartzburg documented his home, studio, and landscape in 2012.
THE ATLANTA SCHOOL

www.theatlantaschool.org
2014-2023
Situated at the base of Greylock Mountain, this experimental art school and artist colony in Atlanta, Idaho, transformed a historic mining town into a laboratory for community building and artmaking for nearly a decade. The Atlanta School offered food experiences, workshops, and residencies supporting art, architecture, and writing.

Thumbs was a scientist, master gardener, and caretaker of high mountains. He was a saver and manipulator of vegetable seeds. He believes purple plants hold special powers. Searching For Quartzburg met up with Thumbs and documented his landscape in 2012.

Billy Oflynn was forced to vacate a 65-year-old legacy in 2010. A part of Dugout Dick’s (Richard Zimmerman) project to live off the land using car parts and ice caves, she and many others came to call his world-building project off the Salmon River home. Searching For Quartzburg documented Dugout Dick’s multi-acre homestead (including many interior and exterior spaces, gardens, and mines) through photography and audio.
Special thanks to Billy for sharing this remarkable place with us right before the Bureau of Land Management demolished it.
